Aspose.BarCode Alternative: Simple REST Barcode API
BarGen is a lightweight alternative to Aspose.BarCode for teams that only need to generate barcodes, not embed a full SDK.
Instead of per-developer SDK licences or metered cloud billing, BarGen charges a flat monthly subscription: free for 1,000 calls/month, $29 for 10,000, $79 for 100,000.
Every barcode is one HTTPS GET request returning SVG, PNG, PDF or EPS, with GS1-128 and GS1 DataMatrix validated against GS1 Application Identifier rules.
Aspose remains the right choice when you need barcode recognition (reading) or an embeddable .NET/Java/C++ library.

Aspose.BarCode is a serious product: native SDKs for .NET, Java, C++ and more, plus a cloud API, covering both barcode generation and recognition. That breadth comes with licensing to match - per-developer SDK licences and metered cloud pricing (models as of August 2026; see aspose.com for current terms).
Most projects we see need a fraction of that surface: generate a correct barcode image on the server and put it in an invoice, a label or a web page. BarGen is built for exactly that fraction. There is no SDK to embed and no credit maths - one GET request per barcode and a flat monthly plan you can predict in a spreadsheet.
The honest dividing line is recognition. BarGen generates barcodes; it does not read them. If your workflow scans or decodes existing barcodes from images, you need Aspose or a scanning library, not BarGen.
When Aspose.BarCode is the better choice
- You need to read or decode barcodes from images - BarGen does not do recognition at all.
- You must generate offline inside a .NET/Java/C++ application with no outbound network access.
- You already license the wider Aspose suite (documents, cells, slides) and want one vendor.
Measured performance
Measured on BarGen production infrastructure (August 2026, median of 200 consecutive server-side renders per format): Code 128 in 0.2 ms, EAN-13 in 0.3 ms, GS1-128 in 0.3 ms, DataMatrix in 1.6 ms and a QR code in 7.0 ms.

Frequently asked questions
Does BarGen read barcodes like Aspose.BarCode does?
No. BarGen is generation-only by design. If you need to decode barcodes from scanned images, Aspose.BarCode or a dedicated scanning library is the right tool.
How does BarGen pricing compare to SDK licensing?
BarGen is a flat monthly subscription tied to API volume, not to developer seats: free for 1,000 calls/month, $29/month for 10,000, $79/month for 100,000. Adding developers, servers or environments never changes the price - only call volume does.
Is a REST API fast enough compared to an in-process SDK?
An in-process SDK has no network hop, so it is faster per call. BarGen's server-side render is 0.2-1.6 ms median for 1D and DataMatrix codes (measured August 2026), so the HTTPS round trip dominates - fine for invoices, labels and web pages; batch endpoints cover bulk jobs (up to 50 codes per request).
Can BarGen produce print-quality vector output?
Yes. SVG, PDF and EPS outputs are true vector formats suitable for professional print workflows, and PNG output supports configurable zoom for high-DPI raster needs.
